a lifetime ago

1st July 1958 - I was 14 years old. I won my group at an interschool sewing competition, when the overall winner was announced it was MY name that was called out. For the competition we had to make a garment in our needlework class. It had to be submitted to a panel for inspection then modelled on a catwalk for style and fit.

The diploma was supposed to hang in the school, the headmaster told me to take it home as he was sure my mother would like it.

The Munro family were emigrating to Australia and the neighbours got together to organise a farewell party for them. I remember their two sons were called Johnny & Michael and I believe the boy in the front of the photo is one of the sons. The photo was taken after the coronation in 1953 and before 10th July 1953 when they sailed for Brisbane on the SS MALOJA.
